Broadway’s Ben Cameron

Footloose, Aida, Wicked  

June 22, 2024    9 am – noon 

This is a dance and vocal interpretation class for students age 13 – 18 seeking to understand the expectations and skills needed to perform at the next level. This  workshop will inspire, motivate and excite serious students.

  • Vocal: Bring your book – 2 prepared pieces -the size of class will determine how much or how many pieces will be sung.
  • Attire: Clothes to dance in
  • Shoes: Jazz shoes or sneakers
  • Students will learn a number to perform with Ben in BROADWAY BUDDY, LIVE!  in the evening performance.                                                     (rehearsal time TBA, performance 7 – 9pm)
    CLASS COST:  $25.00 per person

Join Broadway veteran and beloved personality Ben Cameron for a hilarious night of song and story. Drawing from his tween Mormon theatre geek beginnings to life on the Broadway stage and beyond around the globe, Ben celebrates the differences we can harness to become our life long super powers!  Featuring James Rushin (Lin Manuel Miranda’s Freestyle Love Supreme) on piano.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Students seeking to learn from professional performers.  These workshops expose students to professional techniques in dance, acting, and singing that help students discover their potential.  The workshops are instructional and inspiring.  Students are challenged and encouraged.   The instructors share insights in order to bring out the best in each student.

CRITICAL INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS

Attire: Clothes to dance in

Shoes: Character shoes, jazz shoes, sneakers – not taps

For voice: bring your book, 2 prepared contrasting pieces (or audition cuts), and sheet music in your key.  Size of class will determine what can be heard.

For evening performance:
Attire: to be determined
Rehearsal  5:00/5:30 pm (to be confirmed) 
Performance: 7:00
Parents tickets will be $30 (reg. $45) to attend
(limit two per family)

Eligibility: This class is for musical theatre students and performers who want to improve their skills and become the TRIPLE THREAT schools and directors are looking for. A limited number of scholarships are available by special request for consideration, email boxoffice@candlelightde.org for information.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: BEN’S BIO

Ben Cameron is your Broadway Buddy bringing the Broadway community right to you like a friendly neighbor dropping off brownies. Broadway brownies! Yum. 

Ben is a Broadway veteran who appeared in the original Broadway casts of Footloose, Aida, and a little show called Wicked. If you listen to the second track of the Wicked cast album, you can hear Ben drop the pivotal plot line, “Glinda, Is it true your were her friend?” (Feel free to applaud wildly into your computer screen).

He is the creator and host of the long running variety show Broadway Sessions (2018 MAC Award);  Broadway Buskers Concert Series with Times Square Alliance; the web series Dance Captain Dance Attack on BroadwayWorld.com, Broadway Sessions Beach Party on Fire Island;  the #1 hit podcast, The Broadway Cast; and new podcast sensation Theatre Countdown (available wherever you get podcasts).  Ben is the MainStage host of Broadway Con, was the live audience host for tapings of A Very Wicked Halloween on NBC, The Spongebob Musical on Nickelodeon and is a frequent face on PBS WNET having hosted Hamilton’s AmericaBroadway on THIRTEEN Marathon, Downton Abbey New Years Marathon and much more.

Ben has toured the US and Europe in productions of Footloose, Fame, The Who’s Tommy, State Fair and Sweet Charity. He’s also appeared on cast albums of Footloose andReach the Sky: The Music of Bobby Cronin, singing “Dance Your Troubles Away” (a song written for him by Mr. Cronin).

As a dancer Ben has performed on The ESPY Awards, for recording artists, and in the inaugural companies of Odyssey Dance Theatre and Dre Dance (directed by Taye Diggs, Andrew Palermo). Ben has served on the faculties of NYU’s CAP21 studio and Wagner College, and as creative consultant for Mapinspired: The Storytellers’ Dance Company. 

Ben recently made his return to the stage as ‘Man In Chair’ in The Drowsy Chaperone and starred as ‘Mr. Finch’ in Broadway Green Alliance’s online presentation of  You’re a Green One, Mr. Finch alongside Idina Menzel.

Ben is also a sought after writer, director, performer and choreographer. He travels the world teaching high- energy theatre and dance masterclasses and emceeing Onstage NY talent competitions. Ben continues to lend his signature enthusiasm and razor wit to a variety of projects, concerts and benefits from Broadway and beyond. ABOUT OUR MASTER CLASS PROGRAM

The Candlelight Theatre’s Master Classes are a half-day of intense study with a Broadway professionals to introduce advanced techniques, teach live theatre craft and provide access to Broadway talent. Students age 13 – 18 focus on style and skills, while performing with acclaimed instructors, Broadway performers, as well as Broadway and TV/film casting directors! Each class has a unique theme and different instructor so that students can work with top NYC professionals on such subjects as song interpretation, vocal technique, scene study, monologue performance, and dance. Each class will be held at The Candlelight Theatre and will be followed by a Q&A.

Two ways to participate:

Students: Classes will be open to serious students in college and high school as well as young professionals from the area.

Teachers: We welcome all teachers and invite them to observe Master Classes from the back of the theatre and then participate in the Q&A.
